For each City Walk a survey theme is decided, afterwards, observations from the walk are reported around the table at the Salon . This event is the base activity for the Lighting Detectives and is held regularly for Lighting Detective Club Members. Lets look at some of the past walks and salons.









To grasp lighting environments around the world, the Lighting Detectives have continued to survey local and global cities. Over 45 cities have been surveyed and record in “The World Lighting Journey," which has become an important database for comparing the many lighting environments around the world.









The Transnational Lighting Detectives was established in 1999 with the intention of creating an international network to promote lighting culture. Besides the Tokyo Chapter, regional chapters includeHamburg, New York, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Singapore. We started with just a small step, creating the Tanteidan website www.tanteidan.org, and have grown to include an annual off-site meeting, rotated through the core member's cities.








In contrast to the city walking tours, these extended trips sometimes take the Lighting Detectives to foreign countries to study the nightscapes of various places. Previous night watching tours have included such locations as: Amusement City, Las Vegas, illuminated chrysanthemum greenhouses of the Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi Pref., and Singapore and Honk Kong Christmas Illuminations.








It isn't the illumination of the monumental kind, often found extravagantly lighting up towers, bridges, or castles, but simple experiments to find appeal in the typical, by illuminating scenes buried in daily life. We are not just in the business of adding light, but also eliminating unnecessary or unpleasant light to create beauty and comfort in the nightscape closest to us.

Following the theme: "Turn off the lights and take it slow," candle installations along Omotesando light up the night for this bi-annual event. Centered around student works from Keio University, Tama Art University, and Musashino Art University+The Lighting Detectives, it is a magical two hour event wrapped in warm candlelight for participants and visitors.
